The 7News Spirit of Sport award, which acknowledges NSWIS athletes, coaches and staff who have demonstrated the ‘spirit of sport’ over the past year, was won by Paralympic cyclist Stuart Jones.

The award is the only publicly voted on category of the NSWIS Awards and this year celebrated some of the most touching and heart felt positive moments captured by Channel 7 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In positive signs for the future of the sport, Stuart Jones was awarded the 7News Spirit of Sport Award for his embodiment of the Paralympic value, ‘Spirit In Motion’ which stands for the strong will of every Paralympian to always move forward and never give up.

Slowing during his T1-2 road race at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games to spur on another athlete - South Africa’s Toni Mould, Stuart captured the hearts of the nation with his ‘never leave a man behind’-type mentality.

For Stuart, his actions weren’t something he saw as extraordinary, rather something he imagined everyone would do.

“I just did what I thought was the right thing at the time” he modestly said. “I’ve had a lot of people say what you did was fantastic and I guess it’s hard to take in. It’s really nice to be recognised for this, even though I wasn’t searching for recognition”.

Macquarie National Group would like all to acknowledge the accolade awarded to Stuart and remain proud indeed of his achievement.
