While we know that natural ventilation is vital in achieving good quality airflow in schools, the cold, wet winter weather is making it harder to open doors and circulate fresh air.
As part of a wider COVID-19 response to keep tamariki as safe as possible in the classroom, the Ministry of Education is providing a one-off supplementary energy payment for winter 2022 which will allow your school to determine what works best over the winter months this year without it resulting in unaffordable heating and energy bills.
Here's what you need to know about the one-off supplementary energy payment:

For most schools, the one-off payment will be equivalent to 5% of your school's 2022 heat, light, and water operational funding allocation up to a maximum of $4,000.
- Funding will be provided to all schools by the end of July.
Schools will also be receiving a pack of classroom posters and supporting material which will help your school to maintain good ventilation while staying warm and allowing you to get the most out of CO2 monitoring and air cleaner devices.
Additional support:
Most schools will also receive an additional distribution of portable CO2 monitors and air cleaners at no cost to the school. The quantity you will receive will be based on the number of devices that each school already has, and your school roll. Any additional CO2 monitors will be included in the packs sent, and any additional air cleaners will be delivered separately soon after.
