Update from the Chair

We did it.

We were finally able to hold an event for our members without any restrictions or last minute changes! The feedback from Workshop attendees was very positive and we certainly hope that more of you can make our Annual Conference which is to be held in Auckland on the 1st and 2nd of March. Even though the livestreaming option of attendance will still be available, we are hoping that 2024 will be our largest in-person ATAINZ gathering. Please start planning now, and we will make sure that the content, networking functions and entertainment will be of the highest quality.

Exciting times.

The release of the new RADAR online learning and CPD platform has been received well by members. If you haven’t yet logged in to have a look, please make sure you do as soon as possible. This platform is integral to the education and standards of our membership and will continue to be developed to assist our learning and accreditation pathways. Please remember that from January 2024, all of your CPD hours will need to be logged into RADAR. Click Here for the Radar Quick User Guide.

A rudderless boat.

I’m not sure about you, but at the moment advising clients is challenging. There is currently a lot of uncertainty around the formation of the next government and what policies will be accepted by the new coalition. Hopefully by the time you are reading this, we have a clear direction around the policies and structure of the coalition government and we can put the sails up again! Our SME clients continue to work hard, but they need to know details of the course we are sailing.

A break.

I know that many of our members will have an opportunity to take a few weeks off at the end of year and I certainly hope you make the most of it. In addition to the usual “fun in the sun, book by the beach and drink by the pool” - plan something exciting or unusual! We look forward to hearing about what imaginative adventure you were able to enjoy when we see you “in person” in March. See you then.

All the best,

Richard Abel

ATAINZ Constitution Update

As most of you will be aware, ATAINZ is an incorporated society. You may also be aware that there has been a new Act regulating incorporated societies (The Incorporated Societies Act, 2022) which came into force on the 5th October 2023.

For those of you not so familiar with this, we have attached a brochure that outlines the new legislation.

Memo to Members on Amendments to Constitution Draft

ATAINZ Constitution Draft

Guide to Incorporated Societies - Parry Field Lawyers

As part of the Boards process to ensure that ATAINZ is compliant with this new Act, we engaged Parry Fields Lawyers (who have a very high profile in the not for profit space) to review our Rules.

They have come back with a number of suggestions and recommendations. None of these, in the Boards opinion, are structural or materially change anything that ATAINZ does. Their singular purpose is to ensure compliance with the 2022 Act, or future proof (for example, to make for a more streamline process for AGMs should we ever have another COVID event etc).

Attached to this email is a Memo from Parry Fields that outlines the changes that have been made. Also attached is a draft of the Rules incorporating these changes.

We would encourage you all to read these changes and ensure you are satisfied with them.

The Board is proposing that these changes will go through due process to ensure they can be voted on in the March 2024 AGM.

We are sending them out now, so that the membership has sufficient time to read and digest.

We will also run a Zoom meeting in February for any interested Members who would like to ask any clarifying questions.

If you have any pressing questions on the material attached that can’t wait until February, then please address them to Andrew Palmer (andrew@eppl.co.nz) in the first instance.

Celebrating the Journey: ATAINZ's Remarkable Odyssey

In the heart of dreams, where aspirations bloom, a tale unfolds, of ATAINZ's grand room. A symphony of members, a crescendo of might, we embark on a journey, bathed in the golden light.

Once a seed, a vision pure, now a tree, a membership allure. From the roots of passion, determination sown, ATAINZ has blossomed, a community grown.

The whispers of ambition, the echoes of a goal, ATAINZ's story, a tapestry unrolls. Through the winds of change, and the storms of strife, we've weathered it all, embracing life.

In the dawn's soft glow, where possibilities gleam, members unite, like a tightly-knit team. Growth, the melody, echoing clear,, more voices join, dispelling any fear.

Each member a chapter, in this saga of grace, bound by a common thread, a shared embrace. As the family expands, the benefits bloom, a garden of wisdom, dispelling the gloom.

Networking, a dance of connection's delight, opportunities sparkle, in the membership's light. From mentorship whispers to knowledge shared, the ATAINZ bond, beyond compare.

Through the valleys of challenge, and summits so high, we've conquered together, beneath the same sky. The journey's not over, horizons still call, with ATAINZ, we stand tall.

So here's to the members, the heart and the core, to the dreams we've chased and the goals we adore. In unity we thrive, in diversity we find, ATAINZ, a beacon, in the winds of time.

As chapters unfold, and new stories are spun, ATAINZ, the adventure has just begun. May the future bring growth, and joy to each one, in the tapestry of triumph, together we've won.

Navigating the Marathon:

A Guide to Avoiding Business Owner Burnout in 2024

Balancing Acts: How to Wear Many Hats Without Burning Out

As business owners, we are the architects, problem-solvers, and visionaries of our enterprises. However, with the multitude of responsibilities on our shoulders, it's no wonder that burnout can creep in.

In the ever-evolving landscape and unknown to what 2024 brings, finding that delicate balance becomes more critical than ever. While we are amazing Accountants, we are also business owners, and we get it. We understand the unique challenges of juggling financial intricacies while steering the ship of our businesses through uncharted waters.

1. Embrace the Power of Delegation
You don't have to do it all alone. Delegation isn't a sign of weakness; it's a strategic move to ensure that each task is handled by the right person. Identify the strengths of your team and trust them to take on responsibilities. This not only lightens your load but also fosters a sense of empowerment among your team members.

2. Prioritise Self-Care
It's not just a buzzword; it's a necessity. Schedule breaks, take vacations, and guard your personal time fiercely. Recharging your batteries is not only good for your well-being but is also an investment in the long-term success of your business. Remember, a burnt-out leader can't lead effectively.

3. Set Realistic Goals
Ambition is commendable, but setting unattainable goals can lead to frustration. Break down your objectives into manageable steps, celebrating victories along the way. This not only prevents overwhelm but also provides a constant sense of progress.

4. Tech is Your Friend, Not Your Master
In a tech-driven world, it's easy to get swept away by the constant influx of emails, notifications, and updates. Establish boundaries for screen time, both at work and in your personal life. Create tech-free zones during specific hours to foster uninterrupted focus on tasks or quality time with loved ones.

5. Connect with Fellow Business Owners
You're not alone in this journey. Networking with other business owners can provide a valuable support system. Share experiences, learn from each other's successes and failures, and gain fresh perspectives. Knowing that others face similar challenges can be incredibly reassuring.

6. Reevaluate and Adjust
Flexibility is key. Periodically reassess your business strategies and personal commitments. If something isn't working, don't be afraid to adjust your approach. A business is a dynamic entity, and adapting to change is a strength, not a weakness.

7. Celebrate Small Wins
Amidst the hustle, it's easy to overlook the small victories. Take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate even the minor achievements. It not only boosts morale but also reinforces a positive mindset, helping to combat burnout.

Remember, your well-being is the cornerstone of your business's success and for your clients. By implementing these practical tips, you not only safeguard your own mental health but also fortify the foundation upon which your business thrives. Here's to a balanced and fulfilling 2024!
