GST and your Business

Goods and services tax (GST) is a tax on most goods and services in New Zealand, most imported goods, and some imported services. It is added at a rate of 15%.

As a consumer, you’re probably already familiar with GST and know it’s figured into the invoices you receive for most of the goods and services you pay for.

As a business owner, GST is not a tax on your business income. Your customers pay this when buying your goods and services. You collect GST on behalf of the government.

Your business is a taxable activity. The goods and services you supply to consumers are taxable and the government considers it reasonable for you to be able to claim back the GST you pay when you pay for goods and services.
